5G!Drones use several communication channels for impact creation and for communicating project’s news to the public. One of this channels is the 5G!Drones newsletter which is issued quarterly. The 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) is the voice of European Industry and Research for next generation networks and services. Its primary objective is to contribute to Europe’s leadership on 5G, beyond 5G and SNS/6G research. The 6G-IA represents the private side in both the 5G Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) and the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU).

The Member State Initiatives Subgroup (MSI) of the 6G-IA Vision and Societal Challenges WG has released the report “5G, beyond 5G, and 6G Activities Promoted by Member States”. The document reports that, as of today, all MSs have developed strategies or roadmaps for 5G deployment and their evolution towards B5G/6G networks in the 2020-2025 time frame. The latest 5G!Drones trials took place at Eurecom premises, Campus SophiaTech, Sophia Antipolis, France (16-18 December 2021). For the first time in the world 5G!Drones partners used 5G SA to control a drone! The trials took place in the context of Use Case 2 “Public safety/saving lives”. How can drones play an essential role for smart cities safety? As smart cities are emerging, connectivity needs are increasing dramatically in various scenarios of citizens everyday lives. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), largely known as drones, are expected to play a key role in smart cities environment, providing services for traffic management, public safety, situation awareness and connectivity during large crowd events. Trials at Eurecom premises, Campus SophiaTech, Sophia Antipolis, France (16-18 December 2021). Participating partners EUR, AIR, INV, CAF, UML, RXB, FRQ. Capabilities such as search and rescue operations, mission critical systems (AIR) and sending C2 link over 5G SA were demonstrated. 5G SA network to control a drone was used for the first time in the world! Dr. Harilaos Koumaras (NCSRD), 5G!Drones partner, participated at Industry Panel “5G and beyond – The Perspective of European Research Projects” of IEEE GLOBECOM 2021 on 8th December 2021. At this panel he had the chance to discuss issues related to 5G and UAVs and also and present the “Findings and lessons learnt from the 5G trials of 5G!Drones project”.
